Outdoors At Tangiaro

Here at Tangiaro Kiwi Retreat, the bush still echos with the primal calls of unusual birds and insects. In fact the Tangiaro Valley has one of the highest Kiwi call rates in the North Island - there is a good chance you'll hear this unique call yourself during your stay with us at Tangiaro.  Banded Rail, Kaka & Wood Pigeon can regularly been seen & heard from the cafe deck.

At Tangiaro, there is nature everywhere.  Take a walk down the Tangiaro Stream to reach our natural swimming hole, explore the silver mines along the way but watch our for wetas!  Lie back in a hot bush spa under the stars.  Or just relax on the deck of your lodge listening to the birds.

Outdoor Activities

Tangiaro Kiwi Retreat's location means access to a range of outdoor activities.

Tangiaro Stream - A shallow stream perfect for the younger children, follow the track to reach the natural swimming hole for the more daring!  The swimming hole has a small waterfall above it.

The Coastal Walkway - A popular walk with guests staying at Tangiaro is the coastal walk between Stony and Fletcher Bays.  This walk takes approximately 7 hours return from Stony Bay.  The walkway crosses farmland and goes through coastal forest with views of the Pinnacles, Great Barrier Island (Aotea Island) to the north and Cuvier Island (Repanga Island) in the east. The track follows an easy gradient with a short steep section in to and out of Poley Bay. It is part of an old bridle path formed by early pioneers to link the two bays.  En route from Stony Bay to Fletcher Bay, a signposted lookout 1 hr 15 min along the track makes a shorter walking option, and gives outstanding views along the coast north to Sugar Loaf and Pinnacles area and south towards Port Charles.  45 min on from this lookout, the track descends steeply to Poley Bay. Swimming here is hazardous because of submerged rocks. A short steep climb out of Poley Bay brings the track out on to farmland where it heads down to Fletcher Bay.
